How To : Allocate Resources in Production

Resources can be, pre-,assigned to Operations. In this scenario the machine is planned according to its capacity when the program calculates the Planning Worksheet. This scenario is useful when a resource is always working at the same machine. These assignments can be prepared either through Standard Tasks or directly in the Routing. The following functionality is available to allocate Resources to Manufacturing orders:

Standard Tasks

Standard Tasks are used as a template to complete routings. An option to add resource groups and/or resources has been added to the "Navigate" menu:

  • Type Standard Tasks in the Search Box and select the one in Manufacturing/Capacities/Setup
  • Create a new Standard Task
  • Select the Navigate tab to find the different items that can be attached to a standard task: Tools, Personnel, Description, Quality Measures and Resources

Routing

Resource groups and/or resources can be inserted directly into the Routings

  • Type Routings in the Search Box and select the one in Product Design
  • Open an existing Routing (for example 1000 Bicycle)
  • Select an operation from the list
  • To add a Standard Task make the Standard Task column visible in the list and select the Standard Task from the drill down list to add all items attached to the operation.
  • Open the Line menu list Operation and select the Resource option.
  • In the Routing Resource the following fields must be specified:
    • Resource No., select a specific resource (Description and Resource Group are retrieved)
    • Work Type, required to determine the specific rate for the resource
    • Operation Type: Setup Time or Run Time,
    • % of Operation Time what percentage of the time selected in Operation Time will be done by the resource (if the resource will do all 100%, if 2 resources 50% each, etc.)

Resource Management Setup

On the General tab of the setup you select how the resource costs are posted with the setting in the Cost Posting field:

  • Capacity Center Cost Only: an inclusive rate for the work / machine center is assumed: the Direct Unit Cost + Indirect Cost % + Overhead Rate = Unit Cost
  • Capacity Center Cost + Resource Cost: the cost of the resource is added separately as Capacity Ledger entry, for example when an operation has a lot of "unmanned" machine time.

Note: It is not required to attach the Resource, also a Resource Group can be assigned. In this way Shop Floor assignments can be created (Task Assignments) for a specific department.
